Lebanon problems continue despite new government
Lebanon has been in crisis ever since former prime minister Saad Hariri backed down to growing protests against poverty and corruption late last year. In January, rival factions were able to put their differences aside to establish a new government under Prime Minister Hassan Diab. Yet, protests continue, as many Lebanese believe the new government is just another manifestation of the old regime.
The new government has vowed to fight corruption, but some are worried a selective crackdown may simply be used to silence opposition voices while a blind eye will be turned for others. The political factions of Hezbollah in Lebanon have also backed this government, leaving many of its Shia supporters torn between their loyalties to the pro-Iranian movement and their shared sense of disillusionment with their fellow countrymen of other sectarian denominations. Radio EastMed's Editor-in-Chief Ertan Karpazli touches upon the latest developments.
