Israel preparing for next phase of war with Palestinians with Trump's 'peace plan'
In January 2020, US President Donald Trump announced a "peace plan" to solve the Middle East's seemingly never-ending conflict between Israel and Palestine. The plan envisions a two-state solution, granting Palestinians recognised statehood and economic investment, but falls short of promising the repatriation of Palestinian refugees. The plan also hands chunks of the West Bank, including the entire Jordan Valley, to Israel. Israel also gets to keep a united Jerusalem as its capital. Jordan retains administrative control of the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, which remains in the Israeli-annexed part of East Jerusalem.
Palestinians have rejected the plan, but for the first time some Arab states have expressed support for Israel's demands, indicating Palestinian woes now come second to increasing apprehensions towards Iran's growing influence in the region. Dismissed by some as a cheap attempt by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to garner votes ahead of Israeli elections in March, as well as a distraction from his indictment for corruption and bribery, the plan asks for maximum concessions from the Palestinians, offering them very little in return.
Radio EastMed's Editor-in-Chief Ertan Karpazli argues the plan is provocative, and that is the intention. Moves to annex illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank could trigger another intifada - a confrontation Israel is well-prepared for.
