Iran's hopes for Mediterranean corridor damaged by Suleimani death
General Qassem Suleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's Quds Force brigade, was assassinated in a US drone strike in Iraq at the beginning of January. His death came after US military facilities in Iraq started coming under attack by pro-Iranian Shia militias such as the Popular Mobilisation Forces.
Iran kept true to a promise to retaliate, firing ballistic missiles at US facilities in Iraq. Authorities in Tehran claimed to have avenged the commander's death, but in reality most of the missiles they fired exploded just outside their targets, causing little to no damage.
With the death of Suleimani, Iran's mission to create a corridor of allies across Iraq, Syria and even Lebanon to the Eastern Mediterranean will undoubtedly lose some of its momentum, but will it stop the Islamic Republic all together? Radio EastMed's Editor-in-Chief Ertan Karpazli gives his take on the developments.
