Cracks appear in the Syrian regime amid Bashar al-Assad’s spat with cousin Rami Makhlouf
In February, Syria's Assad regime forces secured control of the highways around Idlib, which now serve as a border on the front lines with opposition and rebel factions. The regime needed control of these highways that connect the capital Damascus with major cities like Homs, Aleppo and Latakia to help revive its diminishing economy.
The dire economic situation proved that Syria could not function as a state when limited to the areas controlled by the regime. Failure to take back the entire country and prevent the downturn has resulted in the economic playing field in Syria becoming much narrower, leading to cracks developing in the Alawite dominated hierarchy that have revealed a split in the Assad family.
A business rivalry between Bashar al Assad’s wife Asma and his cousin Rami Makhlouf spilled onto social media where Makhlouf, now believed to be hiding in the UAE, posted a rare open criticism of the regime leader for his actions in targeting Makhlouf’s businesses and assets.
